About this work and its inspiration:
This is a beaded portrait of Baphomet, a representation of balance opposites in nature, and the union between the natural and spiritual world. Baphomet is a symbol of individual empowerment, self-reliance, and challenging traditional religious dogma.
I have been thinking of the story of Lucifer I grew up learning, and how though its just a story, stories are told for a reason. Often, the traits labeled “evil” are simply the traits the ruling power fears. The story of Satan being cast out, labeled dangerous, and the ultimate enemy is intended to teach us that there is nothing worse than questioning authority, honouring independent thought, and advocating for ourselves. There is a reason ruling powers tell us this story - to keep us close and complacent.
Lately these thoughts are coming to me as reminders as propaganda unfolds before us: be weary of those who label others as the enemy.
I’ve had deep feelings over the past couple of years surrounding Christian nationalism and the way it devours people it deems unholy, and as wars continue to unfold as a result, my sadness feels deeper. It felt important to make this, and for now that’s what matters.
